Crafting Excellence, Uplifting People for Over Two Decades
Urchin Art, founded by Michelle Kunze 20 years ago in October 2006
It started with a small team of local women who were trained by Michelle to produce high quality ceramic items in our studio in Cape Town. What began as a small venture at a local market has blossomed into a thriving business with 20 dedicated artisans. Some of the original staff are still a key part of the urchin art family.
Each piece is handcrafted with the utmost care, showcasing a commitment to quality and creativity that has earned the brand a loyal following.
Michelle, a self-taught artist, began her journey in ceramics with a passion for creating beautiful, functional pieces. Over the years, she expanded her repertoire, learning to craft not only ceramics but also soaps and candles, reflecting her dedication to artistry in every form. This knowledge is constantly transferred to the team.
The heart of Urchin Art lies in its ethos: a commitment to local craftsmanship and the creation of unique, high-quality products. With each piece meticulously made by hand, the brand has become synonymous with excellence, sustainability, and the beauty of handmade goods. As the company continues to grow, its core values remain intact, making it a beloved choice for those who appreciate artisanal products.
Urchin Art’s journey from a humble market stall to a successful business is a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and craftsmanship. Her husband, Kristoph Kunze, joined the business five years ago, bringing his expertise and shared vision to the company. Together, they lead, Urchin Art is poised to continue delighting customers for years to come.
