Local entrepreneur, Lou Harvey, is a success story that’s up there with some of the biggest names in South African business. What started as one small store in Durban has exploded into a thriving enterprise with 8 stores around the country, stockists internationally and an even bigger incremental reach, thanks to the strong online presence via her extensive website. Although she counts Hong Kong, the USA, U.K. Australia and Norway as part of her distribution chain, her philosophy continues to serve and support local communities.
Originally known for her bags, Lou’s increasing popularity has meant numerous sensational additions to her collections year on year. Lou Harvey now boasts a range that is as diverse as it is magnificent – everything from small accessories such as stationery, key rings and wallets to wine coolers, lunchboxes, laptop bags and more. They are a must for gifting at conferences or a special thank you to clients.
Having originally studied fashion design and interiors, she built up her knowledge base and expertise working at big brands such as Wetherlys and Home Fabrics. From there, she bought – and built up – a business that made bags and steered it to the successful company that it is today. Undoubtedly some of her biggest sellers are her practical yet fashionable baby accessories; something she quickly realised that there was a gap in the market for, after she gave birth to her daughter, Izzy.
Lou insists on using an entirely local production team in all of the different aspects of her business. This includes fabrics, her employees and her production line. Lou recently opened a bigger factory space and as the main focus is to inspire and motivate her staff, she is proud to have close on 100 people in her full time employ. With an entire range that was born out of a need of own, the practical elements of Lou’s collection cannot be ignored, but it is the fun, stylish finishes that have really made this home-grown brand such a favourite – both locally and globally.
