SIGNATURES brings together the best in South African products. The selection includes home accessories, home textiles, gifts and fashion accessories. This year, a curated exhibition of furniture presents showpieces by 13 furniture brands, all from the Western Cape, a number of whom are located in the George/Knysna area - the traditional heart of wooden furniture manufacturing in South Africa, whilst others are based in Cape Town. All have up to date, well-equipped workshops and factories, and are combining the latest technologies in their manufacturing withtraditional hand-made techniques. Not only do they design and manufacture their own ‘signature’ furniture for local, regional and export markets, but they also work with decorators and architects in creating bespoke pieces.
Development by Design enables small and medium businesses in South Africa to develop. Nearly 30 entrepreneurs are participating in the project, taking their design studio or manufacturing company to the next level, and onwards to the export market. The Dutch Centre for the Promotion of Imports from Developing Countries (CBI) has set up this programme in South Africa, and has partnered with the Cape Craft and Design Institute (CCDI) and the Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA). Together, these partners promote local entrepreneurs at local shows and international trade fairs.
At SARCDA in Johannesburg from August 18-21, Development by Design is presenting the SIGNATURES, showcasing 20 South African companies; Africa Ignite, Minima, Meyer von Wielligh, Veneer Concepts, Design Afrika, Feeling African, Lidi Ada Naturals, Zizamele Ceramics, Barrydale Handweavers, Rarity Handbags, The Wren Design, Saks Corner, Fechters, Arthur K, Indigo Designs, Skinny LaMinx, De Steyl, Vogel Design, Guideline Mnf and Touw Meubels.
